There are always certian aspects of any venture that aren't the fun part. Most of the time they don't take long, but you just keep putting it off. To overcome that I do the Dreaded Task first then allow myself a half ohour of What I Want To Do Most, which is usually applique, hand quilting or drawing new designs.

Thanks Rosalind. And, Celine, don't you know I write them for me, too! This one I think is universal with fiber people. We have too many shiny, colorful things around us just naturally!

Thank you Morna for addressing this topic. It is so easy to be distracted. I find to really get my goals accomplished I have to set up 2-3 times during the day and evening I MAY check my email and make responses. I also have to work from a list and I employ a work-reward system. For instance: I must do x number of contracts before I can get that cup of tea or do some handwork or look at one of the many magazines calling me :). It really keeps me focused to know there is "reward" at the end of list completion! Thanks again!

Mary, I love the word persistence. I know seeing that word when you need to work will make a difference. Let me know how it goes. Did you make an art piece with the word. I'm hoping some of our readers will post their sites so you can see them.

Persistence is my word. I am new to the idea of making "art", plus this is a year in which many things need to happen. So persistence will be a strength that is needed. I am hoping that having a word of direction will keep me moving forward.

Kim,

All we really need to say is, "No. Thank you for asking, but I can't." Most of us think we need to give an excuse with it or we'll seem rude. You noted the people-pleasing aspect; lots of us are there.

I remember when I became better at 'No.' I was asked to recruit people for a committee for a charity project. I remember the woman I called who said, "No, I can't be on this committee, but I'd love to work the day of the event. Can you put me on that list?" She looked at what she could do to help. So that's one tip. If you don't want to say no, look for a different way you can say yes, one that works for you so you don't overcommit. You said you might fear not being asked next year. You could add with your no, "be sure to ask me next year."

Also remember that many times you are asked, the person is just going down a list of names. You say no, they move onto the next person and don't remember you were a no.

Issue 110, Spring 2010, of The Professional Quilters also has an article on 17 ways to say no. And, practicing helps. You need to get that "No" muscle in shape!

Brenda, you are most welcome. I'll definitely look for the exhibit at Quilt Market this fall. One thing I didn't mention is that your challenge so makes me want to be a part of a similar challenge.
